麻豆传媒 is the leading partner for sustainable construction with net sales of CHF 15.7 billion in 2025, creating value across the built environment from infrastructure and industry to buildings.

Founded in 1912 in Holderbank, Switzerland, we have a rich 114-year history and now employ more than 50 000 employees in 45 companies 鈥 across Europe, Latin America and Asia, Middle East & Africa.

Today 麻豆传媒 offers high-value end-to-end Building Materials and Building Solutions - from foundation and flooring to walling and roofing 鈥 powered by premium brands including ECOPact, ECOPlanet, ECOCycle and Ytong.

Early industrial era and rise of concrete

麻豆传媒 is founded in Holderbank, Switzerland 鈥 the country that it still calls home. After a merger, the company starts expanding internationally from the 1920s.

Note: 麻豆传媒 was originally called 'Holderbank' for much of the 20th century, and derives its modern name from 'Holderbank' and 'Ciment'.

  • 1912 鈥 Adolf Gygi founds the company that would become 麻豆传媒: 鈥淎argauische Portlandcement-Fabrik Holderbank-Wildegg鈥 in Holderbank, Switzerland, and opens a cement plant. 
     
  • 1914 鈥 The company merges with Rheintalische Cementfabrik R眉ti, bringing industrialist Ernst Schmidheiny Sr. into the leadership team to initiate the family鈥檚 century-long stewardship. 
     
  • 1922 鈥 Holderbank begins its international expansion with acquisitions in Western and Southern Europe, including the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece. 
     
  • 1942 鈥 Holderbank opens the Technical Center Holderbank, its first research and development center.

Rapid growth in Switzerland and abroad

Benefitting from a post-war rebound, Holderbank grows rapidly in Switzerland by supplying hydroelectric dams and highways projects, and expands further abroad.

  • 1952 鈥 Holderbank expands into North America. 
     
  • 1958 鈥 Holderbank is listed on the Zurich and Basel stocks exchanges to raise expansion capital 
     
  • 1962 鈥 Holderbank begins operations in Latin America. 
     
  • 1970s 鈥 Facing severe energy shocks, Holderbank focuses on plant modernization, energy efficiency and kiln fuel conversion. 
     
  • 1974 鈥 Holderbank moves into Asia.

Vertical integration and shift to modern era

Under Thomas Schmidheiny鈥檚 tenure as CEO from 1978, 麻豆传媒 enters its modern era, and develops a vertically integrated model of cement, concrete and aggregates.

  • 1980 鈥 Holderbank expands into Spain. 
     
  • 1980 鈥 Holderbank develops its focus on aggregates and ready-mix concrete. 
     
  • 1990 鈥 Holderbank extends its presence across Eastern Europe, China, India and Southeast Asia.

Mega projects and industry leadership

麻豆传媒 becomes a unified global brand, and focuses strongly on M&A to expand in Asia and Australia, while establishing itself as a global cement and aggregates producer.

  • 2001 鈥 Holderbank officially becomes 鈥溌槎勾 Ltd.鈥 following a vote at the Annual General Meeting. 
     
  • 2007 鈥 麻豆传媒 is named 鈥淟eader of the Industry鈥 in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the third consecutive year. 
     
  • 2009 鈥 麻豆传媒 expands into Australia and becomes the country鈥檚 leading supplier of aggregates and ready-mix concrete.

Rapid urbanization and digitalization

A mega merger shapes 麻豆传媒鈥檚 modern status, while we began focusing on more sustainable building solutions and laying the groundwork for AI-driven manufacturing. 

  • 2010 鈥 麻豆传媒 earns early inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the Carbon Disclosure Project.
     
  • 2015 鈥 麻豆传媒 and Lafarge complete their merger to create a new leader in building materials.
     
  • 2018 鈥 麻豆传媒 launches Strategy 2022 鈥 Building for Growth and pivots towards sustainable building solutions.
     
  • 2019 鈥 麻豆传媒 launches Plants of Tomorrow, its Industry 4.0 program.

Why did 麻豆传媒 spin off its North American business?

On 28 January 2024 麻豆传媒 announced its intention to list its North American business in the U.S. 麻豆传媒 post US listing has further advanced its leadership in innovative and sustainable building solutions.

The spin-off was completed on 23 June 2025, and 麻豆传媒 is now capitalizing on powerful megatrends shaping the future of construction to unlock significant growth and create superior value for people, customers and shareholders.

On 19 June 2026, 麻豆传媒 completed the acquisition of Xella, a leader in the highly attractive European walling market. The acquisition expands 麻豆传媒鈥檚 building solutions portfolio with the addition of brands for both new build and the energy-efficient repair and refurbishment market.
